What Do You Need To Survive?
Survival is the ability to remain alive and healthy in difficult or dangerous situations.
To survive, both your basic and physiological needs must be met. Basic needs are those necessary for sustaining life, such as water, food, shelter, air, and a stable temperature, while psychological needs address emotional well being. physiological needs include breathing, eating, drinking,sleeping, and maintaining body temperature.
Humans can only go about 3 minutes without oxygen,3 days without water and 3 weeks without food, making access to these necessities paramount.
Basic Needs for survival
Water: Water makes up over 60% of the human body. It’s essential for regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients, protecting cells , and many other functions. A person can only survive for about three days without water. Drinking plenty of fluids is especially important in hot weather or during physical activity, as you can lose a lot of water through sweating.
Food: Food provides your body with the energy and nutrients it needs to function. The three main types of nutrients are carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. Proteins are used to build and repair tissues. Fats are used to store energy and help absorb vitamins. A person can survive for about three weeks without food, but they will start to lose weight and become weak.
Shelter: Shelter protects you from the elements and provides you with a place to sleep. Shelter can be as simple as a tarp or a cave, or it can be a more permanent structure like a house or an apartment.
Air: Air is essential for breathing. The oxygen in the air is used by the body’s cells to produce energy. A person can only survive for about three minutes without oxygen.
Temperature: Humans are warm-blooded animals, so we need to maintain a core body temperature of around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius). If our body temperature gets too high or too low, we can die. We can stay warm by wearing clothes, using blankets, and staying in heated buildings. We can stay cool by wearing light clothing, drinking cold fluids, and staying in air-conditioned buildings.
Psychological Needs for Survival
- Safety and security: This involves protection from threats and having stability in your environment.
- Love and belonging: This includes feeling connected to other people, such as family and friends.
- Esteem: This is the feeling of being valued and respected by others.
- Self-actualization: This is the need to reach your fullest potential and achieve your goals.
Addressing your physiological and psychological needs is important for both your short term and long term survival. This is especially true in emergency situations, when you may need to rely on your own resources to stay alive.
